Beware of easy answers or guarantees. Seek the companionship of others who will befriend you and listen as you live the questions of your life. To receive spiritual direction is to recognize that God does not solve our problems or answer all our questions, but leads us closer to the mystery of our existence where all questions cease.

What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual direction is an ancient tradition that involves meeting one-on-one (or in groups) to offer space for a seeker to give attention to the presence and activity of God in their life. A spiritual director facilitates a space where one can say anything that needs to be said in the presence of God and another person.

People come to spiritual direction to explore any number of things, including:

  • Discernment-- making choices

  • Reflection on one’s past, present and future story

  • Developing an awareness of the sacred in the everyday

  • Navigating hindrances to the spiritual journey (shame, fear, doubt)

The spiritual director’s job in these sessions is simply to listen, ask questions and guide one’s attention to where the Spirit is leading.

About Nina Schuurman-Drenth

Nina fell in love with spiritual direction the minute she walked into her spiritual director’s office in 2017. Since then, she’s always resonated with the truth that sits at the heart of spiritual direction: that each person has the capacity to seek and find the God who is seeking and finding them; the role of the spiritual companion is simply to offer loving awareness to this reality.

Nina holds a Masters of Divinity from Wycliffe College (University of Toronto) and is currently completing a Certificate in Spiritual Direction from the Pheonix Centre for Spiritual Direction. Read more about Nina here.
